Read Our Newest Review from the City Paper

city_paper

Angelique Bamberg and Jason Roth from the Pittsburgh City Paper recently visited Barcelona at Rivers Edge.  Here is an excerpt from their review titled Mediterranean Views:

Lobster macaroni-and-cheese was a real surprise. This once-original dish has become a reliable, if rarely inspired, staple at any restaurant that considers itself remotely chic, and to tell the truth, we ordered it here mainly for our kids. But when it arrived, we found ourselves tempted to take Barcelona’s truly excellent rendition for ourselves. It had a wonderfully creamy sauce (close to an Alfredo) which allowed the campanelle pasta to shine and the sweet meat to stand out; a hint of nutty tang came from the strong, grown-up-worthy cheese grated on top.

Some Wonderful Feedback!

Thankyou

Check out this great review from one of our recent customers!

“I just wanted to say thanks to Mr Roman and his staff for a great 4th of July Celebration.  Not only was it the 4th but it was my Dad's 80th Birthday and we had a family party of eighteen, that was treated great. From appetizers, salads, pasta and a main course of choice, the food was excellent. Our sever couldn't have been more pleasant and of course the view was spectacular. Mike also allowed us to bring our own cake and his whole staff sang Happy Birthday to my Dad, my Mom and Aunts are still talking about it, thanks again.  “

-- Chris

Thank you so much for these words, Chris.  It was our pleasure to serve you and your family on this special day.  We hope you return soon!

Due to last night’s severe weather event, Barcelona regretfully had to postpone our wine event until next Monday.  We would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.  Severe thunderstorms caused a power outage in the area and several local roads were closed until well into the evening forcing us to cancel the event.

But in light of the overwhelming popularity of this wine celebration, we would like to invite out guests to join us on Monday, July 18th for our Vintage Affair outdoor deck wine tasting.  We hope you can attend this rescheduled date and look forward to sharing this evening with you!

Fun Food Facts!

saffron

Here are some fun facts about Spanish food!   You can read the complete list here.  Feel free to share more facts with us so we can add to this list!  Here we go:

    • Spain makes 44% of the world's olive oil, more than twice that of Italy and four times that of Greece. More than a quarter of Spain's oil (10% of the total world production) comes from Jaen.
    • Nearly three-quarters of the world's saffron is grown in Spain.
    • The original paella was not considered a seafood dish but had chicken, rabbit and pork (and sometimes snails). There is some debate over the origin of the word.
    • Tapas is not a type of food but a way of eating it. Tapa means cover and was traditionally a slice of cheese or ham placed over a drink.
    • The Spanish (in particular, the people of Cadiz) claim to have invented fried fish. Great Britain had links to Cadiz in the eighteenth century and it is thought that the British imported the idea of fish 'n' chips from there. Though
    • Spain is more famous for its red wine than white, the majority of its vineyards have white grapes.
    • Sherry, the fortified wine,  comes from the city of Jerez in Andalusia. 'Sherry' is a corruption of Shariz, the Persian name for the city. In Spanish, sherry is simply called 'vino de Jerez' (Jerez wine).
    • Tomatoes, potatoes, avocadoes, tobacco, and cacao (for chocolate) were all imported into Europe by Spain.
    • Spain is one of the top five importers of Scotch whiskey in the world.

Is Spanish Cuisine Good for You Too?

Ilovespanishfood

Did you know Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine is considered one of the healthiest diets on the planet?

Spanish Recipes Can be Part of a Healthy Mediterranean Diet

We have all heard and read about the Mediterranean Diet, which seems to be so popular in newspapers, magazines and especially diet books. Spain is one of more than a dozen countries on the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying lots of sunshine. Therefore, Spanish food contains a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and nuts, a huge selection fish from the Atlantic and Mediterranean, as well as red meat and pork. Although each Mediterranean country has its own cuisine and unique dietary customs, there are general characteristics that are the same throughout the Mediterranean, including Spain:

  • Fresh fruits & Vegetables, bread, potatoes, nuts and beans are eaten daily in large quantities.
  • Olive oil is the primary source of fat, which is a monounsaturated fat (sometimes called the “good fats”) and does not raise blood cholesterol in the same way that saturated fats and trans fats do.
  • Fish is eaten several times a week and contains omega-3 oils, thought to reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Meat and poultry are eaten in smaller quantities.
  • Wine is consumed moderately.

(We especially love the bit about the wine!)  You can read more about the benefits here.
